Cultural Studies Mission Statement

Cultural Studies seeks to provide opportunities to facilitate students' learning and personal awareness, including that of under-represented groups, by increasing awareness and knowledge of diversity issues (for example cultural, ethnic, regional, social) that frame both the individual and the community.  It provides a university forum for responding to the increasing need to comprehend the role and formation of culture beyond disciplinary divisions, regions of the United States and national boundaries.  Cultural Studies provides students with opportunities to explore work with faculty and other students from many departments. It promotes the study of culture in all its varied forms: western and non-western, folk, popular and underground, and seeks to understand how diverse cultures and social differences relate to and interweave with the general education and social landscape.
