Undergraduate Admission Requirements

The application fee for undergraduate applicants is $30.00. Our recommended application deadlines are: October 31 for the spring semester, April 30 for summer I/II and June 30 for the fall semester.

English Language Requirement

International undergraduate applicants must demonstrate a proficiency in the English language.  They must submit to MSU either official TOEFL or official IELTS score reports.  Our minimum requirement for the TOEFL is 173 (computer-based), 500 (written), or 61(Internet-based). Our minimum requirement for IELTS is 5.0.

 

SAT or ACT Scores

To assist in the proper placement of students in the areas of English, mathematics, science and social studies, all entering undergraduate international students must take the ACT exam upon arrival unless valid ACT or SAT scores are on file. Entering transfer students with fewer than 24 semester hours of credit completed will be asked to take the ACT exam for the same reasons.

Official Transcripts

All transcripts of academic work completed in high schools must be submitted in an officially sealed envelope by the issuing school. They must be in English or accompanied by a certified translation/evaluation. Transcripts of academic work completed in institutions of higher education outside the United States or Canada must be submitted in an official sealed envelope by the issuing institution. In addition, transcripts must be evaluated through World Education Services - www.wes.org, phone: 212-966-6311, fax: 212-739-6100. A comprehensive course-by-course report is required. Official Financial Statement

International students who apply for undergraduate admission must submit the following:

  • Official financial statements from either their financial institution or sponsor’s financial institution showing that they have at least $19,160 in U.S. dollars to finance their studies. Photocopies will not be accepted. Financial documents dated more than 3 months prior to acceptance are not valid.
  • A letter of financial support from a sponsor when applicable. The letter must indicate the time period of support and amount of money that will be made available for the prospective student. I-20 forms will not be issued until after the financial statements with all supporting documents have been received and students have been admitted to the University.

 

Freshman Admission Checklist

  • A letter from a sponsor when applicable
  • Valid ACT or SAT scores are required before admitted students may register for classes, to ensure proper placement of students in coursework.  

*No TOEFL or IELTS score report is required if a student has studied at a high school of any of the following English-speaking countries for a year and has received a graduation diploma: the United States, Australia, Canada (except for French providences), Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

 

Transfer Admission Checklist

All international students who are currently attending an international accredited institution of higher education, or have completed two or three year degree and wish to complete a bachelor’s degree should submit the following documentation:
  • International admission & scholarship application
  • $30.00 application fee
  • Official college transcript*
  • Official TOEFL or IELTS score report.
  • Official financial statement showing a total of at least $19,160 in U.S. dollars.
  • A letter from the sponsor when applicable

Students who have earned fewer than 24 semester hours must also send:

  • Official high school transcript with an English translation
  • Valid ACT or SAT scores are required before admitted students who have earned fewer than 24 semester hours may register for classes, to ensure proper placement of students in coursework.

*Transcripts of academic work completed in the accredited institutions of higher education outside the United States or Canada must be evaluated through the World Education Services. The World Education Services website is: www.wes.org, Phone: 212-966-6311, Fax: 212-739-6100.

 

Academic Achievement Scholarships

International Undergraduate Scholarship*
Value per year:  $5,000

To be eligible to apply, a student must be admitted unconditionally to MSU as an entering freshman or as a transfer student and must have a minimum ACT composite score of 20 or a minimum SAT composite score of 950.

 Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship*

Value per year: Recipient pays only 1.25 times the in-state tuition rate instead of the out-of-state rate.

To qualify:  Be Unconditionally admitted to MSU and meet ONE of the following requirements:

1.  Be an entering freshman or a transfer student with less than 24 total semester hours and meet all:  a minimum admission index of 450 or higher; and a minimum ACT composite score of 18 or higher or SAT combined score of 860 or higher; and live in a geographic area (see list of counties) designated by MSU for special tuition rates NOTE:  A 2.5 GPA and an 18 ACT would equal an admission index of 430, which would not meet the minimum admission index requirement of 450; or

2.  Be an entering freshman or transfer student with less than 24 semester hours and have a minimum ACT composite score of 23 or higher or SAT combined score of 1060 or higher, regardless of place of residence; or

3.  Be a transfer student with a cumulative college GPA of 3.0 on at least 24 semester hours and live in a geographic area (see list of counties) designated by MSU for special tuition rates and have a minimum ACT composite score of 18 or higher or SAT combined score of 860 or higher; or

4.  Be a transfer student with a cumulative college GPA of 3.0 on at least 24 semester hours and have a minimum ACT composite score of 23 or higher or SAT combined score of 1060 or higher, regardless of place of residence; or

5.  Be the child or grandchild or spouse of an active MSU alumnus and meet all:  a minimum admission index of 450 or higher; and a minimum ACT composite score of 18 or higher or SAT combined score of 860 or higher (Note:  An active alumnus is defined as someone who makes annual gifts to the MSU Foundation, Inc.) and

Submit a completed application packet by March 15.  

* Can not receive both International Scholarship and Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship

Transfer Scholarship

Value per year: $2,000

To qualify:  Be admitted to MSU as a transfer student from any accredited college or university and meet both of the following requirements:

1.    Have completed at least 24 hours of college coursework; and
2.    Have a cumulative college GPA of 3.5 or higher and

Submit a completed application packet by the March 15 priority deadline.  Note:  Students should apply as early as possible to ensure consideration, as funds are limited for these scholarships.  If funds are exhausted for this category, priority will be given to qualifying students with the highest GPA figures and with the earliest date of submission of completed application packet.
