Highlights from the Academic Year:

New Students 2008-2009

We've spent a lot of time recruiting at all of our high school in the fall semester.  We think we've recruited an excellent group of students.  Even though we're "full" for the year we may have a few spots open up closer to the summer, if current students decide not to participate.  If you are interested in being a a part of the UB fun be sure to submit an application for this year.  You'll likely be placed on our waiting list, but you may get in this year, or be first on the list next year!  See our application page.  You will need to complete this and get all forms to your guidance counselor.

Congratulations!!!

Special congratulations go out to the students who participated in TRiO ThinkQuest this summer.  Three of our teams placed in either quarter or semi-finals.  Click on the link on the team name to see the site.  The sites were: Men in Green (Chad Wells-Team Captain from Menifee County, Blake Mullins of Menifee County, and Crystal Smith of Montgomery County), The Green Team: Ways to Recycle (Michael Bortles-Team Captain from Estill County, Shannon Crouch of Morgan County, and Kayla Parsons of Carter County), and Eco-Friendly Shopping (Morgan Fultz-Team Captain from Mason County, Meghan Davis of Montgomery County, and Nathan Hall of Olive Hill) made it to Quarterfinals and two teams, The Green Team: Ways to Recycle & Eco-Friendly Shopping, made it to Semi-Finals.  None of our teams made it into the finals this year, but all team will continue working on their sites and enter them in Oracle's ThinkQuest International competition in the spring of 2009.  Creating these sites was a great challenge and winning a place in quarter or semi-finals is a huge honor!

Another congratulations goes out to a team from last year. Remodeling Mars (Chad Wells & Tanner Stevens) recieved an Honrable Mention under the catagory of "Other High-Scoring TRIO Sites" in the Oracle ThinkQuest International competition.  Contgratulation Chad & Tanner!!!!

Important Links - Just for You!

The US Dept. of Education recently completed the site www.college.gov.  It is an exciting new resource that gives first person accounts of students who overcame challenges to going to college such as peer pressure, lack of family support, and financial barriers.  Ir provides relevent, comprehensive information about why to go, how to go, and how to pay for college or other postsecondary education programs.  If you've had questions about going to college or might not have been considering higher education this site will be engaging, imformative, and inspiration.  It will help you create your own "roadmap" to college and beyond!

Kentucky also has a very useful website, www.GoHigherKY.org.  It provides many resources that pertain to Kentucky students.  For example you can logon and check the status of your Kentucky Educational Excellent Scholarship (KEES) Money, manage online applications to many state institutions, get detailed information about specific schools in Kentucky, request that your high school get transcripts to your selected colleges & univerisities, and much more!

Upward Bound is again participating in Peterson's My Student Edge this year.  If you didn't get a chance to check it out at the October Return Trip you can send an email to upwardbound@moreheadstate.edu and we'll send you the appropriate access codes.  Only Upward Bound Students can use this software.  This program will help with a variety of test preparation, college searches, career searches, scholarship searches, resume builder, information on financial aid, advice on all sorts of college related topics, and much more!  If you've already registered with My Student Edge make sure you use it to its fullest potential!
